Crofton School ICT Cross-Curricular Project

Staff involved:

Mrs Gurpall Badesha (Co-ordinator)
Ms Alison Tiltman (Science)
Mr Greg Whitehouse (Technology)
Mr Richard Ryder (Mathematics)

The school is working towards developing collaborative approaches to using ICT to promote cross-curricular work.
By being involved in this project we aim to improve pupils’ motivation, engagement and standards. Another aim is to achieve greater curriculum coherence in Mathematics, Science, Technology and related subjects by exploiting opportunities to use ICT in approaches to collaborative teaching and learning.
There are many projects that we are looking at developing.

The school will be running a cross-curricular day in June for all Year 8 students. The pupils will be involved in a circus of activities that will be set up across all three subjects. Pupils will use ICT to collect and analyse data to complete a project. At the end of the day they will evaluate their findings and be awarded with prizes
for the most innovative groups.

On the 29th September 2006 the school ran a pilot day with a range of Year 9 pupils. The day went very well and evaluations from this have allowed us to make judgements about the range of resources we use and the format of the day.

Our gifted and talented Year 8 pupils are working on a Rocket challenge, this will involve working across all three subjects to design, test and build their rockets.
The school is working with a Science Engineering Ambassador on this project.

In their Year 9 Technology lessons, pupils are to undertake a project where they will apply their designing creativity to the skills they have been taught in Science.
The project will involve designing, making and promoting ‘bath bombs’. Pupils will be taught the science behind the manufacture of both bombs, and will then have to use this knowledge to design, manufacture and package their own products. A Science teacher will teach pupils during some of their Technology lessons, which should enhance a stronger cross-curricular link.

Currently Crofton is re-designing their pond and garden area. We will be involving pupils across a range of Year groups. We will also work with Geography to design, plan, cost and build the garden area. We hope that pupils will develop a website to record and track the progress made on this project. This will include digital and video footage of each stage of the project. We have a very good link with the a.s.e.(association for science education) on this project. I hope they will support the school to produce an excellent pond/garden area that will benefit the school and local community.
